Breakfast just got even better! These French Toast Sticks are filled with a canned apple pie filling, rolled up, fried and coated in cinnamon sugar. This is one quick and easy breakfast your family will love!
These Apple Pie French Toast Sticks are hands down my kids’ most favorite breakfast! Whenever they get to choose a special birthday breakfast, this is it! And it’s such a fun and easy meal to make! We’ve always got all of the ingredients on hand and we’ll switch up the filling with different pie fillings like peach, cherry or triple berry.
Since it’s already a sweet dish, there’s no need to add syrup for dipping! But if you’ve got a big sweet tooth, I’m not going to hold you back!
Choosing your bread
For this recipe, you’ll want to make sure you use a soft, white sandwich bread. I love to use my Pain de Mie, baked in a Pullman Loaf pan (which makes it a square shaped loaf – so easy for trimming off the crust!). It’s SUPER soft and delicious! It’s our favorite everyday bread and we always have some on the counter or in the freezer. But any white, soft sandwich bread will do!
How to make apple pie filled french toast sticks
There’s just a few simple steps to make this delicious breakfast:
- Stack your sliced bread and trim off the crusts from all four sides.
- With a rolling pin, flatten each slice.
- Spoon your apple pie filling onto the bottom third of the slice and roll it up (careful not to fill too much or the filling will spill out the ends and it will be difficult to roll up). Get all of your french toast sticks rolled up before moving on to the next step.
- In a shallow pan, combine the eggs, milk and vanilla. Whisk them together until fully combined.
- Heat up a skillet on medium heat and melt butter to coat the bottom of the pan.
- Dip each french toast stick in the egg mixture and place in the buttered skillet, seam side down. Brown them on all four sides – I use the back of my tongs to flatten each side so that it’s becomes a rectangular shape, rather than round. It’s much easier to brown all four sides when they are flat.
- Transfer the french toast sticks from the pan, directly to the cinnamon sugar mixture and coat all four sides. Serve and enjoy!
My number one tip
When cooking these French Toast Sticks, use the back of your tongs to slightly and gently flatten each side and you cook and flip – create four flat sides to your French toast stick. This helps you to be able to easily brown the entire outside of the rollup! (see the video for more).
It’s much easier to brown the entire outside if the sides are flat.
Apple Pie plus French Toast! Yes please! Hot cinnamon apples and buttery toasted bread are such a delicious combo! Rolling it up into french toast sticks makes them a such a fun treat to eat and serve!
Switch it up and use different pie fillings. Use what your family loves! That’s the wonderful thing about making something from scratch – YOU get to create and decide how it’s made!

PrintApple Pie French Toast Sticks
Breakfast just got even better! These French Toast Sticks are filled with a canned apple pie filling, rolled up, fried and coated in cinnamon sugar. This is one quick and easy breakfast your family will love!
- Prep Time: 20 minutes
- Cook Time: 10 minutes
- Total Time: 30 minutes
- Yield: 22 French Toast Sticks 1x
Ingredients
- 2 loaves of soft, white sandwich bread (I prefer to use my Pain de Mie bread)
- 1 can (21-ounces) apple pie filling*
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup (114g) milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup (198g) granulated sugar
- 1 Tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 4 Tablespoons unsalted butter (for coating the pan)
Instructions
- In a shallow pan, like a pie pan, combine the ingredients for the cinnamon sugar mixture. Set aside.
- Stack several slices of bread at a time and trim off the crusts on all four sides. This recipe makes about 20-22 french toast sticks.
- Using a rolling pin, flatten each slice of bread.
- Spoon 1-2 spoonfuls of pie filling along the bottom edge of each flattened slice. Carefully roll it up, keeping the filling inside (the filling can spill out of the ends if there’s too much inside).
- In a shallow pan like a pie plate, whisk together the eggs, milk and vanilla. Set aside.
- Place a large frying pan on the stovetop and heat to a medium-low to medium heat. Melt 1 Tablespoon of butter, coating the bottom of the pan.
- Dip each of the roll ups in the egg mixture and place seam side down in the pan. Brown and turn all four sides of the rollup (Tip: Use the back of your tongs to gently flatten each side as it cooks, creating four flat sides to the french toast sticks.)
- Once each side is golden and toasted, toss the hot french toast sticks with the cinnamon sugar mixture to coat completely.
- Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
- You can use any pie filling you like! Our favorite besides apple pie is cherry pie filling!
