There’s something special about the recipes we grow up loving. My Mom is an amazing baker – I get my love of baking from her! She created so many yummy things for her children, recipes that became family favorites! Later, when all of us nine kids were grown and out of the house, she compiled a cookbook for us, with all of our favorite recipes. This is by far, my favorite cookbook on my shelf!
You guessed it, this Apple Crisp recipe comes from my Family Favorites Cookbook! My mom has probably made thousands of apple crisps in her lifetime! There’s just nothing quite like biting into a hot apple crisp with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!
Let’s talk apples…
When baking a sweet treat, typically you want to use a tart apple and one that will hold its shape well when baked. My favorite kind to use are Granny Smith apples. Using an apple with a more tart flavor will keep your end product from being overly sweet. Jonagold and Honeycrisp apples work well too!
The tart apples are going to taste amazing mixed with the sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg!
If you are lucky enough to have your own apple tree or live in an area where there is an abundant apple harvest, take full advantage! My mom has her own apple tree that produces more than she could ever use. During harvest season, she will make several Apple Crisps and freeze them for later. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve gone to visit her and she pulls an Apple Crisp out of the freezer! My kids love that Grandma always has a sweet treat in the freezer for anytime they come to visit!
Mom’s food always tastes better, but it wasn’t until I started making Apple Crisp on my own that I discovered how simple and easy it is to throw together!
Assembling your Apple Crisp
- peel and slice your apples
- toss the apples with lemon juice, sugar and spices & place in a greased baking dish
- combine the butter, sugar, oat mixture in a bowl with your hands
- sprinkle topping over the apples and bake
It’s that simple…another reason I love this recipe! No mixer needed! It’s something you can make with very few ingredients and takes no time at all! I have even prepared it ahead of time and kept covered in the refrigerator until ready to bake!
Can we talk about this topping for a second? Combine the sugar, flour and oats. Then it’s time to really get your hands dirty – drop in all of that glorious softened butter and just mash it all up together with your hands! It’s messy, but it’s really the easiest way to incorporate all of the butter with the dry ingredients. Pinch all of that yumminess together until everything is hugging the butter – no flour, oats or sugar left behind!
Spread the prepared apples into a greased baking dish. Sprinkle all of that buttery goodness on top of those sweet, cinnamon apples! Use it all up to completely cover them. In the oven, the topping is going to brown and crisp beautifully! When you pull it out of the oven, the juices from the apples will be bubbling up, peaking through that gorgeous browned crust! Can’t you just smell it?!
Apple Crisp really deserves to be served hot out of the oven! Since this recipe is really sweet and buttery, a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream goes really well on the side! What’s more classic than that?
This is really one of the easiest, yummiest apple recipes you can make! Everyone loves it! Try using other fruits like peaches, pears or blueberries – the possibilities are endless! You really can’t go wrong!
I’m confident this Apple Crisp will become one of your family favorites too!

- Freeze baked Apple Crisps and reheat later. When reheating a frozen Apple Crisp, cover with foil and heat in a 350° F oven for 30-45 minutes – until it’s warmed through. If you allow it to thaw before reheating, cover with foil and reheat for 20-30 minutes – until it’s warmed through.
